Indegestion - What is it?

Indigestion – What is it?

In a normal, healthy stomach, the flow of gastric acid which helps break down food goes unnoticed.  However sometimes too much is produced, causing the acid to rise up to the oesophagus and leading to distressing symptoms such as burning, discomfort and chest pain (often referred to as “heartburn”)

What causes gastric distress?

Many foods and lifestyle factors encourage excess stomach acid and may contribute to digestive problems.  These include:

  • Smoking

  • Stress & anxiety

  • Greasy fatty foods

  • Alcohol and caffeine

  • Spicy food

  • Citrus fruits and onions

  • Some prescription drugs such as anti-inflammatories, antidepressants, hormones and blood pressure medications.

  • Obesity

Natural Solutions

  • Avoiding the triggers listed is the best way to avoid the discomfort of digestive problems, but it is not always possible.

  • Antacids such as Kruses Fluid Magnesia are the most common and effective immediate solution when discomfort occurs.  Antacids neutralise stomach acid by using magnesium, calcium or potassium, which all have alkaline properties.  Magnesium bicarbonate is the mildest form of antacid, and the gentlest on the stomach.

  • Antacid preparations are designed to be used for short term only so it is important if symptoms persist, to see a health care professional.

  • Exercise is a great way to tone the whole digestive system.  The oesophagus uses muscular contractions (called peristalisis) to move food along the digestive tract after eating.  However, food inside the stomach is only kept there by force of gravity. A gentle walk helps food to move down the stomach and digest, and regular exercise helps prevent obesity.

  • Drinking lots of water helps encourage food to go down.

Kruse through the Silly Season with Kruses!

It’s that time of the year when we’ve all been indulging a little too much, and too many mince pies and champagne over the holidays can mean a bad case of overload for the tummy.

Indigestion, flatulence and heartburn aren’t exactly topics of barbecue conversation but they’re a very common problem for a lot of people.

Fortunately, a bottle of Kruses Fluid Magnesia in the cupboard can help keep symptoms (and embarrassment!) at bay.

Kruses Fluid Magnesia is one of Australia’s most traditional and trusted natural antacid supplements.

The liquid formula of magnesium bicarbonate makes it an easy-to-take solution to assist digestion, particularly for children with ‘upset tummies’ who can’t take antacid tablets.  It also acts as a mild laxative.

Kruses Fluid Magnesia is a rich source of the essential mineral magnesium, so it can also help correct magnesium deficiency.  Magnesium is critical to many celullar functions including energy production and calcium absorption.

Magnesium deficiency has been linked to many health conditions and complaints from headaches to muscle tension.  Kruses helps supplement the diet where magnesium is deficient, helping improve general wellbeing.

Kruses Fluid Magnesia can be mixed with fruit juice or water, making it easy to serve to children.  At around $7.00 for 300mL it is an affordable way to manage the silly season comfortably, for the whole family!
